Todai Sustainable Campus Project Website

Message from the President of the University of Tokyo

Makoto Gonokami
President, The University of Tokyo

The University of Tokyo is committed, through its own actions, to paving the way for a sustainable society. To this end, we launched a university-wide project—Todai Sustainable Campus Project (TSCP)—in April 2008, under which we have undertaken wide-ranging activities to achieve a low carbon campus as an absolute priority.

We are pleased to share with you that in FY2012 we achieved our short-term goal of reducing CO2 emissions from non-experiment sources by 15%.

Universities are being urged to become well-rounded educational and research organizations, while also taking responsibility for institution-wide reductions of CO2 emissions as business entities. To create a sustainable society, it is essential that individual institutions tackle CO2 reductions without impairing core activities for achieving their primary objectives. Consequently, we regard the university campus as an experimental laboratory for achieving sustainability, and we are developing a next-generation model in collaboration with society as a whole. I believe that it is our responsibility to apply our intellectual resources and deliver solutions that shape a better future.

With TSCP now entering a new phase, we remain dedicated to achieving a sustainable campus. In doing so, we look forward to your continued understanding and support.
